•OrganizeproducerstoselectGIsforlocallysourcedgoodsandcreatestandardsfortheirapplication.
•PromotethespecialqualitiesofGI-brandedgoodstoenhancetheirmarketability,spreadingthecostsamongmemberproducers.
•GetinvolvedintheinternationaleffortstostrengthenGIprotection.ContacttheU.S.PatentandTrademarkOfficeandstresstheeconomicharmlocalproducersfaceintheirinabilitypetewithforeignproductsduetoinadequateGIprotectionfortheirgoods.
ThescopeofGIprotectioniscurrentlybeingdebatedinconnectionwithboththerevisedLisbonAgreementandtheongoingtradenegotiationsbetweentheU.S.andEuropeanUnionforafreetradeagreement.
•RegisterGIswiththeappropriatestatetrademarkoffice.SuchregistrationwillatleastprovidealocalbasisforpingunauthorizedusewhiletheGIgainstraction.
GIsarenotthesolutionforallmarketingissues.Butforgoodssuchasmarijuana,theyprovideastrongplatformtosupportinternationalmarketingefforts.Allittakesanization,planningandproductswithageographicuniquenesstosupportthenicheGIscancreate.
