SpaceChargeForce Anidealbeamofprotonswouldbeasmalldiameterstreamofparticlestravelinginadirectionwhichisexactlyparalleltotheaxisofthebeam.Thestreamofprotons,however,containsonlypositivelychargedparticlesandsincepositivechargesrepeloneanother,theprotonsexperienceaforcefromtheirneighborswhichcausethemtodivergefromtheaxisofthestream.Thisforcewithinthebeamitselfiscalledthespacechargeforce.Otherfactors,suchastheconditionsofthearcintheionsourc�,also_af- feetthedirectionoftheparticlessothisidealbeamcannotbeachievedinactualpractice. Theangleswhichthepr-0tonsmakewiththeaxisatvariouspo­sitionsacrossthediameterofthebeamdetermineacharacteristicwhichiscalledthebeamquality(oremittance).Thequalitycanbemeasuredbymovingaslitacrossthediameterofthebeamanddetectingthetransmittedbeamonverynarrow(8/1000inch)stripswhichdeterminetheanglesinwhichtheprotonsaretravelingwhentheypassthroughtheslit. TwoGoalsforNALAlthoughtheNALgoalistocreateanewcenteroftechnicalandscientificexcellence,anequallyimportantgoalistopre­serveandperpetuateasmuchaspossibleofthearea'snaturalre­sources.OneofthemenresponsibleforcarryingouttheLaboratory'splansforpreservingthenaturalresourcesoftheLaboratorysiteisRobertL.Hines,NAL'sFarmManager,aformerresidentofIowa,havingreceivedaBachelorofScienceDegreeinAnimalSci­enceandanassociatedegreeinPre-VeterinaryMedicine.Withabackgroundoftwentyyearsinag­riculturalsales,petitorinthejudgingoflivestockandmeat,winnerofmanyblueribbonsatStateandCountyFairsalloverthecountryforprizehereford,angusandshorthorncattle,in­cludingseveralGrandCham­pions,Bobbringsatruecon­serv.:.tionistattitudetohisposi­tion. SitePlansTheexistingfencesaroundtheindividualformerfarmsontheNALsitewillberemoved.Manyofthefarmhomesmaybepre­servedforpossibleuseascampus-associatedhousing.Farmareaswillbeseeded,withalimit­edamountofmachine-mowing(possiblyaherdofangusorhere­fords,orevenbuffalo,doingesnaturally!
)Exceptforsev­eralnecessaryessroads,therearenoplansforex­pressway-typehighways­mercializethearea.Watercatch­mentlakes,streamsandreser­voirswillbeplentifulonthesite.Somethoughthasbeengiventousingaportionofthelandforamodelfarm.TheformerVillageofWestonmaysometimebeusedasaresi­dentialareaforLaboratoryvis­itors-a- plexconsistingofindividualhomessurroundingabeautifullakewithgrovesoftreesandoth­erlandscapingplementthevillage(honestly,noattemptisbeingmadetoduplicatetheorigi­ nal"BigWoods.")Anursery,tobuildupand maintaintheoveralllandscaping,willbealong-term,perpetuatingprogramtoinsurethattheareawillbemaintainedinanatural,park-likeatmosphere.Plantingaroundtheelerator'sMainRingandtheotherscientific structureswillblendinto'·theexistinglandscape. HistoricalDisplaysNALhopestohaveanhistorical displayofpastandpresentmem­orabilia,probablyhousedinoneofthebeautifullargebarnsonthesite.Thesouthwesterncornerofthelandmightprovidearecrea­tio,1area,includingicareas andalargelake(possibly­passing50acres)forsummerandwintersports.IftheMidwestwillprovidethesnow,theremaybeaskislopeforthehardier"sports." Aninterestingprojectnowintheplanningprocessforthesum­merof'69isaFarmsteadDayCampforurban,suburbanandruralyoungpeopletojoininmindandskill-buildingactivities.Al­thoughgardeningontenacresistheprimaryconcernofthispro­gram,film-making,birdhouse­building,creek-wadingandmead­owbaseball,plant-naming,andbonfire0singingarealsoontheschedule.Itmaywellbethatthisgroupofyoungsters,witha"back-to-nature"concept,willtakethefirststeptowardcreat­ingtheattitudeBobHinesisseek­ingtoestablishasaconservationcriterionfortheLaboratory.
