4.COAADistinguishedScholarSymposium2013 May2013-TheCOAADistinguishedScholarSymposium2013washeldonMay42013attheEarthSystemScienceInterdisciplinaryCenter(ESSIC),UniversityofMaryland.Dr.FuzhongWeng,Prof.MingCai,andProf.XinZhongLianggavethreekeynotetalksonleadingscientificresearchandapplicationinthefieldsofSatelliteMeteorology,Climate,andEarthSystem.About50peopleattendedthesymposium. Dr.FuzhongWeng,theactingchiefofSatelliteMeteorologyandClimatologyDivisionofNOAA/NESDIS/STAR,gaveatalkentitled“UsesofSuomiNPPDataforImprovingHurricane/TyphoonForecasts”.HetoldthestoryofhowSuomiNationalPolar-OrbitingPartnership(SNPP)satellitewasnamedafterProf.VernerE.Suomiandpresentedthelatestprogressonitsresearch.BoththeAdvancedTechnologyofMicrowaveSounder(ATMS)andtheCrosstrackInfraredSounder(CrIS)onboardSNPPsatellitearewellcalibratedandwillbereadyforuserapplications. couldbeverypromisingforthehurricanemunitysincetherehasbeenverylittleimprovementinthehurricaneintensityforecastinthepasttwodecades. 5.COAAConvenedthe6thInternationalConferenceonAtmosphere,Ocean,andClimateChangeinHongKong August2013–The6thInternationalConference onAtmosphere,Ocean,andClimateChangewasheldessfullyinHongKongfromAugust19-21,2013.Theconferencebroughttogetherover150scientistsfromaroundtheworldtosharetheirlatestscientificfindingsandtechnologicalbreakthroughsinthebroaddisciplinesofatmospheric,oceanographic,climatechangeandearthsystemsciences.Eightconferencethemeswerepresented:ClimateChangeandOurActions;AsianMonsoon;AerosolandClimate;CloudandPrecipitation;WeatherForecastingandDataAssimilation;Ocean,Air-SeaInteractionandClimate;ClimateVariabilityandModeling;RemoteSensing.Amainthemeoftheconferenceisonglobalchangeandregionalresponses.icsofwidepublicinterestdrewmuchattentionandcoveragebythelocalmedia.
