ThePlanistheresultofextensivecontributionbyallmembersoftheUniversitytowardstheformulationofavisionforthefutureofthecampusastheUniversityevolvesinmeetingitsaspirationsandobligationstoserveasaninternationalcentreofeducationandresearch.Weinviteyoutoexaminethesynopticreport,whichhasbeenpostedontheCMPwebsite(www.cuhk.edu.hk/cmp)andgiveyourfurtherviews. Anessentialfactorinshapingthereporthasbeenitsprocessofconsultation,andthemostimportantproductoftheprocesshasbeenthediscoursethatithasgeneratedaboutthecampus,leadingtoasharedvisionamongstthevariousconstituenciesoftheUniversityincelebratingthelegacyandtraditionthathavestronglydefinedthecultureoftheChineseUniversity.TheMasterPlanisessentiallyasynthesisofthemanyideasandviewsgeneratedinthisprocessintoafeasibleplanofaction.Inordertocontinuethisprocess,theMasterPlanhasputforthcertainmendationsandimplementationstrategies,includingamechanismtoensurethattheMasterPlanwillbeupdatedperiodicallysoastoremainrelevantandappropriateinrelationtoanyfuturedevelopmentoncampus.Itisbasedonthefollowingsixprimarypreceptsthathaveemergedoutoftheprocessofconsultationsandexpertstudies:
1.Planninganddesignofplacesforeducationandresearchactivities2.Enhancingcollegelife3.Promotingapedestrian-friendlycampus4.Conservingplacesofvalue5.Creatingalandscapeofvitalimportance6.Makingasustainablecampus TheMasterPlanhasidentifiedandassesseddifferentsitesoncampusforpotentialdevelopment,havingregardtotheirgeologicalfeatures,ecologicalcharacteristicsandculturalvalues.Theyhavebeenclassifiedintositesofimmediate,intermediateandlong-termpotential.ThePlanembracestheprinciplesofsustainabledevelopmentandstrikesabalancebetweenprovisionforgrowthandenhancementofcampusenvironmentwiththeconservationofnaturalheritage. Thepreparationofthefullreportofferstheopportunityforincorporatingthemanyideas,andmuchinformationumulatedintheprocessaswellastherefinementanddetailingoutoftheideasintroducedintheiroutlineintheSynopticReport.Wetrustthatyouwouldfindtheprincipalaspectsofyourexpectationsandsuggestionsincorporatedorenvisionedinthesynopticreport,justastheideasandsuggestionsresultingfromconsultationsandworkshopswillformanextensivepartofthefullreport. Althoughthiswillendtheproject,wemustnotethataMasterPlanisaprocessembodiedinalivingdocument.Toserveitstruepurposeessfullyinguidingthefuturecourseofgrowthandchangeinthecampus,itmustremainopentochangingconditionsandnewideas,andwillrequirecontinuedinterestandengagementoftheentiremunity.Yourcontributionisnolessessentialtothatfutureessoftheprocessthanithasbeenuptothispoint.
